Embracing Artificial Intelligence in Education: The Rocket for Our Minds
The idea of transforming education has been around for decades, but the reality is that change has been slow to come. It's like the classic movie, "Groundhog Day," where the main character, Phil, finds himself stuck in a time loop, living the same day over and over again.
Just like Phil in "Groundhog Day," it seems like we're trapped in a never-ending cycle when it comes to education reform. We discuss the need for change, but the same problems persist year after year. We propose new ideas, but they never seem to gain traction. It's like we're stuck in an endless loop with no way out.
But, just like Phil in the movie, we have the power to break the cycle.
And AI can be the driver for that.
In "Groundhog Day," Phil eventually breaks the time loop by changing his approach and focusing on personal growth. Similarly, we can break the cycle of stagnant education reform by embracing AI, instead of trying to ban it.
If educators and society are questioning students who use AI to cheat, it reflects more on the flaws in the education system rather than on the students' character.
10 Assumptions about the Future of Education in an AI-dominated world
While some believe that AI will be the downfall of traditional education, I believe the opposite. In fact, I see AI as an opportunity for education to adapt and improve in ways that were previously impossible.
One of the best teachers I had in college didn’t necessarily bring the best knowledge to class. The information was widely available online. But he was an awesome storyteller, always bringing cases he had based on his own experience and awesome creative contests for students, in order to engage the classroom.
It was not about the information he shared. But he was the most inspirational teacher I ever had.
I believe that’s an awesome frame to think about the future of education.
I’ve been thinking a lot about the future of education and decided to summarize these in 10 assumptions about the future of education in the Artificial Intelligence Era.
1. AI-powered personalized learning
AI will be used to create personalized learning experiences for students based on their individual learning styles, interests, and abilities.
2. Gamification of education
Education will become more gamified, with students learning through interactive games and simulations, as we are able to create these experiences with text-to-video, text-to-3D, and text-to-image tools.
3. Competing on collaboration, not grades
Schools will compete on their ability to foster collaboration and teamwork among students, rather than just their ability to produce high test scores.
4. Virtual assistants as teaching aids
Virtual assistants, such as chatbots, will become common in the classroom to help students with homework, answer questions, and provide personalized feedback.
5. Balanced blend of human and AI talent
The future of education will rely on a balanced blend of human and AI talent to deliver the best learning outcomes.
6. Time-sensitive learning
Time-sensitive learning will become more prevalent, with students given opportunities to learn about topics as they become relevant to their lives.
7. Every student is unique
Every student will be recognized as a unique individual with different talents, interests, and abilities, and education will be tailored to meet their specific needs.
8. User-generated, co-created learning content
Students will be encouraged to create their own learning content and co-create it with their peers.
9. Teachers will help students develop critical thinking skills
In a world where AI is used for many routine tasks, it will be more important than ever to develop critical thinking skills. Mentors will help students understand how to think through complex problems and develop creative solutions.
10. Teachers will help students develop emotional intelligence
While AI technology is great for many tasks, it is not that great at providing the emotional support and guidance that humans can. Mentors will help students develop emotional intelligence skills and navigate their social and emotional development. In a world that is increasingly dominated by machines, emotional intelligence will be a critical skill for individuals to succeed.
AI is like a rocket for our minds
This quote from Steve Jobs is more important than ever:
I think one of the things that really separates us from the high primates is that we’re tool builders. I read a study that measured the efficiency of locomotion for various species on the planet. The condor used the least energy to move a kilometer. And, humans came in with a rather unimpressive showing, about a third of the way down the list. It was not too proud a showing for the crown of creation. So, that didn’t look so good. But, then somebody at Scientific American had the insight to test the efficiency of locomotion for a man on a bicycle. And, a man on a bicycle, a human on a bicycle, blew the condor away, completely off the top of the charts.

I think Mr. Jobs could say something similar about AI.
Maybe AI is a rocket for our minds.

But what will stop these things from happening quickly is the actual concept of school.
The economics of schools have seen them grow to deliver economies of scale. Kids as individuals get lost at best, brutalised at worst.
The key thing AI and super personalised learning can offer is tiny schools, that are super local normal place in the community, not factories of learning/superprisons.
But Turkies don't vote for Christmas.
